Battersea Eurometer; July 2025

Engaging passer-bys in conversation

During an interlude to the heatwave in London this summer, Saturday July 5 saw us bring our Eurometer to Battersea. We set up our survey and information stand, complete with European Movement banner, on the Northcote Road. Despite battleship-grey skies and stop-start rain, there were still plenty of local people out and about who were happy to give their opinions on where we are with European relations. The issues were particularly topical in light of the reset agreement signed between the UK and the EU in May.

Our questions for the suvey concerned international relations with both the EU and the USA, the proposed new Youth Mobility now under development, how locals were feeling about the impact of Brexit and levels of support for a twin town for Wandworth. As per normal we encountered a range of interesting views, with a handful of people keen to politely reaffirm their vote to stay out of the EU, but a majority telling us they would vote to rejoin should the opportunity arise. Noone we spoke to could say for sure that the Brexit vote had improved their life. There was clear support for both the youth mobility, and for a twin town arrangement for Wandsworth Borough.

The Wandsworth and Merton team in action!

Of course, just as important as our survey were the many interesting conversations that we were able to have with people from the area. Click below to listen to one such discussion with Chiara, a local business owner who we met during the day, and who kindly agreed for her thoughts to be recorded for our website.
