Our latest street survey, held in Mitcham Town Centre, proved to be one of our most positive and insightful outreach events to date, helped by November sunshine and lots of highly engaged passer-bys. Following our summer event in Wandsworth Town, this was the first visit to Mitcham since our memorable appearance at the annual funfair on the Common. This time we set up stall near the clock tower in the town centre.

The results of the Eurometer were strikingly clear. Participants expressed overwhelming support for restoring youth mobility for work and study, reviving or creating European town-twinning partnerships, strengthening trade with the EU, and working more closely with European partners on defence and security. When asked whether leaving the EU had improved their lives nearly a decade after the referendum, literally no one said yes. Brexit was widely seen as having made life harder, not better.
Beyond the dots on the board, our conversations brought these results to life. We spoke with a woman whose two children are currently at university and who hopes future cohorts will once again have opportunities to study abroad through Erasmus+. One man who said he voted for Brexit in 2016 spoke openly of his disillusionment, explaining that while he had hoped for migration to be better managed, the process was ill-prepared and ultimately backfired.

Overall, the day gave us a much clearer sense of how Brexit continues to affect everyday lives. We also distributed cards about our values and how to get involved, encouraged by the strong appetite for honest discussion and for rebuilding a closer, more cooperative relationship between the UK and Europe. To help form the plans for our campaign in 2026, don’t hesitate to register for our upcoming Wandsworth and Merton AGM!
